Beautiful butterflies are everywhere!
There are about 18,000 species of butterflies worldwide, and about 750 species in the United States alone. That may seem like a lot, but even a small change to their environment can make a big impact on their numbers.
Their own special homes
Butterfly sanctuaries are built to keep butterflies safe and healthy. These sanctuaries are enclosed habitats where different species live and breed in a natural, controlled environment. Often called butterfly houses, they also provide opportunities to learn more about these fascinating creatures.
Make a house visit
Watch butterflies in their habitats to see how they eat, live and grow. If you’re lucky, you might see some butterflies emerge from their cocoons and take their first flight!
*Some butterfly houses listed here are only open for part of the year. Be sure to call before you visit to check that the butterflies are on display.
